Travelling to Kudremukh and Agumbe was a dream come true for two friends united by their love for nature and adventure. Located in the Western Ghats of Karnataka, these places promised lush greenery, mist-covered hills, and vibrant wildlife, and they did not disappoint.

How We Reached

We started our journey from Bangalore, opting for an overnight bus to Mangalore. From there, we hired a taxi to Kudremukh, enjoying the scenic drive through the Western Ghats.

Budget, Transportation and Food

It cost us around 8000 to 10000 for private transportation, food, accomodation and guided treks. We preferred Budget stays and local food. You mostly get Idli, Dosas, Neer Dosas and Fish curry. Public transports are available but we preferred cab and rented vehicles.

Agumbe is known as King Cobra capital of India. These majestic snakes are found in huge numbers as a result Agumbe Rainforest Research is dedicated to the study and conservation of King Cobras and other reptiles.King Cobras avoid human contact and only strike when threatened. Many experienced guides ensure a safe trekking experience. Organizations like the Agumbe Rainforest Research Station (ARRS) help in conservation and awareness, reducing human-wildlife conflict. If you follow trekking guidelines, encounters with dangerous wildlife are rare. Though Agumbe is remote, basic medical facilities and snakebite treatment protocols are easily available.

Precautions for Tourists

Stick to Trails – Avoid wandering into dense forest areas.

Wear Protective Clothing – Full-sleeved clothes and sturdy shoes help prevent bites from insects or small creatures.

Avoid Night Walks Alone – Most snakes, including King Cobras, are active during certain times of the day.

Do Not Disturb Wildlife – Never provoke or try to handle any snakes or other creatures.

Stay in Reputable Accommodations – Resorts and homestays have safety measures in place.

Families with kids can visit, but it’s better to opt for shorter, easier treks. Make sure to stay in well-maintained homestays or eco-resorts. Always keep kids close and educate them about the surroundings.


Our Experiences in Kudremukh and Agumbe

Kudremukh

Kudremukh’s scenery was stunning. Although difficult, the hike to the summit was worthwhile. The expansive sight of undulating green hills from the summit made every sweatdrop worthwhile.

Kudremukh National Park’s richness was captivating. It felt like a dream to see the lion-tailed macaque. There was nothing like the peace of the woodlands.

Agumbe

We were mesmerized by Agumbe’s rain-soaked elegance. Trekking through the thick woods to reach the Jogigundi waterfall was like entering a different universe, and the sunsets were gorgeous.

One of the highlights was learning about the King Cobra at the Agumbe Rainforest Research Station. Agumbe’s allure was enhanced by the waterfalls and the steady drizzle.


Challenges We Faced

Weather Conditions: The relentless rain made trekking tough, and we had to be extra cautious on slippery trails.

Connectivity: Being disconnected from mobile networks was challenging initially, but it allowed us to immerse fully in nature.

Leeches and Insects: Leeches were everywhere. Salt became our best friend during treks.

Accommodations: It was difficult to find lodging in Kudremukh. Although simple, Agumbe’s homestays were comfortable.

Concluding remarks

This journey was a once-in-a-lifetime experience. It was all the more unforgettable because of the difficulties.

Kudremukh and Agumbe taught us to embrace nature with all its beauty and unpredictability. It’s a journey we’ll cherish forever.
