Harshil Valley: Uttarakhand

Harshil Valley is located on the banks of a stream Bhagirathi. With snow caped mountains around, valley on one side and Deodar Forest on another, lies a calm and peaceful village. The view looks as if a nature painting has come to life. The village actually has buildings and houses with paintings on them which is an interesting fact. Most buildings are painted yellow with paintings on them showing local activities, face of local people and their culture. Bagori village is closest to Harshil market.
Houses
The architecture here follows a unique style that uses locally sourced Deodar wood and dry stacked stone. the interlocking of wooden beams with stone walls makes it resilient to earthquake. Due to heavy snowfall, houses have steeply sloped roofs The houses are elegantly arranged in a straight line, nestled between two majestic mountains.
Livelihood
Apple trees adorn the yards of most houses. Potatoes, apricots, rajma are also locally grown here. As the climate becomes very cold, in winter the locals move to a different village or Dehradun city. For 6 months they live there because of extreme cold and snowfall and come back when climate changes. Traditional Sheep yarn making is done by ladies here as they use wool to protect themselves from cold.
Religion
People here have a blend of traditions and religious beliefs. There is a temple and a monastery positioned next to each other. People believe in both Gods and we know of a Tibetan influence by seeing Tibetan prayer flags fluttering on the bridges. Gangotri temple is one of the Char Dhams of Uttarakhand. Mukhba village is believed by locals to be the winter abode of goddess Ganga.
